Best before dates and food waste

What role do “best before” dates have in the food waste discussion?
Do you think they shall be abolished, clarified, or changed? If changed/clarified, how?

What we do know now for sure is that around 1/3 of the food is waste, in large parte at home. And poor understanding of “best before” dates by consumers is playing a role. This topic is under discussion in several countries in the world and we lack global harmonization around such terminology. UK retailers and companies like Unilever are already experimenting creative solutions, scrapping such dates or use them altogether with indications to consumers to check smell and appearance of the food.

Soon we will see the outcomes of the EU Commission’s impact assessment on it, under the Reg. EU 1169/2011 review.
