Food recalls in EU – Week 11 – 2014

This week on the RASFF database (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) we have two recalls from consumers in EU in the alert notification:

– Biotoxins: Diarrhoeic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP) toxins in cooked mussel meat, following food poisoning. Origin Ireland and Netherlands, notified by Ireland, distributed also to Italy;

– Foreign bodies: two sharp plastic fragments in figbread with almonds, following a consumer complaint. Origin Spain, notified by Germany, distributed also to Austria.

We have also three recalls, following information for attention and information for follow up notification:

– Non-pathogenic microorganisms: moulds in strawberry flavoured cakes, following a consumer complaint. Origin Italy, notified by Greece;

– Novel food: unauthorised novel food ingredient 3,3 diindolylmethane (DIM) (synthetic) in food supplement, following an official control on the market. Origin Finland (with raw material from France), notified by Finland, distributed also to Belgium, Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Sweden and United Kingdom;

– Poor or insufficient controls: inadequate termal processing (prawns) of seafood sandwich filler with prawns, following company’s own check. Origin United Kingdom (with raw material from Iceland), notified by United Kingdom, distributed  also to Gibraltar.

Between the alert notifications, followed by a withdrawal from the market of the product:

– Allergens: undeclared sesame in flavouring, following an official control on the market. Origin Czech Republic (via Poland), notified by Slovakia;

– Allergens: undeclared sesame in chocolate muffin, following an official control on the market. Origin Poland, notified by Slovakia;

– Allergens: undeclared mustard in chilled spare ribs sate, following an official control on the market. Origin Belgium, notified from Belgium, distributed also to Luxembourg;

– Pathogenic micro-organisms: Norovirus in oysters, following food poisoning. Origin France, notified by Denmark;

Pathogenic micro-organisms: Listeria Monocytogenes in frozen brie and camembert, following company’s own check. Origin Germany, notified by Germany, distributed also to Belgium and Italy;

– Pathogenic micro-organisms: too high count of Escherichia Coli in live mussels, following an official control on the market. Origin Greece, notified by Italy;

– Pathogenic micro-organisms: Listeria Monocytogenes in chilled pasteurised sheep’s milk chees, following company’s own check. Origin France, notified by France, distributed also to Belgium.

We have also a seizure of choline chloride 60% corn cob from China for unauthorised genetically modified (Bt63) rice. Notified from Bulgaria.

Regarding border rejections we have, among the others, Salmonella spp. in frozen poultry meat and turkey meat preparation from Brazil, in sesame seed from India and in paan leaves from Bangladesh. Norovirus in frozen, cooked and boiled clams, cooked  from Vietnam. Aflatoxins in pistachio nuts and in pistachio kernels from Iran, in pistachio nuts from Turkey and in blanched peanuts from China. Groundnuts in shell from Egypt infested with moulds and dead insects and excrements of insects in dried raisins from India infested with moulds. Absence of health certificate(s) for groundnut chikki from India and for nougat with pistachios from Iran. Fenitrothion in olives from Egypt, formetanate in chilled sweet peppers and fresh peppers from Turkey and clofentezine in peppers from Turkey. Spoilage of chilled white grouper from Senegal, unauthorised substance sibutramine in slimming coffee from Thailand and United States, unauthorised placing on the market (Bidens andicola, Chuquiraga jussieui, Equisetum bogotense, Equisetum giganteum, Lasiocephalus ovatus, Piper carpunya and Tropaeolum tuberosum) of herbal infusions from Ecuador, tebuconazole, tolfenpyrad, flonicamid, flubendiamide, diflubenzuron and chlorantraniliprole and unauthorised substance dinotefuran in green tea from Japan, lufenuron and hexaflumuron in green tea from China and cadmium in frozen octopur.

For feed, we have an alert notification, followed by a withdrawal from the market:

– Heavy metals: unauthorised feed additive cobalt proteinate in feed for goldfish, following an official control on the market. Origin Belgium, notified by France.

For food contact materials we don’t  have any important notification this week.

We have also one recall, following an information for attention notification:

– Composition: unauthorised substance vanadium in food supplement, following an official control on the market. Origin United States, notified by Finland;

Between the alert notifications, followed by a withdrawal from the market of the product:

– Pesticide residues: dimethoate in apples, following an official control on the market. Origin Poland, notified by Sweden.

– Heavy metals: mercury in frozen sliced mako shark, following an official control on the market. Origin Spain, notified by Italy;

– Packaging defective/incorrect: vacuum leakage in bags with high energy meal for enteral nutrition, following company’s own check. Origin Germany, notified by Denmark.

We have also a seizure of frozen yellow tuna bits for high content of histamine. Origin India, notified by Italy.

Regarding border rejections we have, among the others, shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli in boneless beef meat and chilled bovine meat from Brazil, aflatoxins in roasted pistachios and in dried figs from Turkey, in pistachio nuts from Iran, in pistachio kernels from Afghanistan (via Turkey), parasitic infestation with Anisakis of chilled silver scabbardfish from Morocco, mercury in frozen swordfish from Senegal, histamine in canned sardines in soja oil from Indonesia, benzo(a)pyrene in smoked sardines from Ghana, poor temperature control of frozen squid from India, benzo(a)pyrene in chilli oil and in hot chilli sauce from China, chlorpyriphos-ethyl and diphennylamine in green peas from Kenya, carbendazim in fresh peppers from Turkey and in basmati rice from India, famoxadone in peas from Kenya, too high content of sulphite in dried apricots from Turkey, hexaconazole in long yard beans and permethrin and lambda-cyhalothrin  in chilli peppers from the Dominican Republic, unauthorised substance sibutramine in slimming coffee from the Philippines and buprofezin, chlorpyriphos-ethyl, and acetamiprid in tea from China, high content of aluminium in potato vermicelli from China.

For feed, we have an alert notification for too high contents of ragweed seeds (Ambrosia spp.) in complete food for birds. Origin Belgium, notified by Germany.

For food contact materials we have migration of chromium and manganese from kitchenware in plastic and metal, migration of chromium from steel kitchen cutlery and too high overall migration from folding plastic forks from China, migration of primary aromatic amines from nylon whisk from Hong Kong.

We have also a border rejection for unauthorised genetically modified (Bt63) rice in choline chloride 60% corn cob from China.
