Food recalls in EU – Week 9 – 2014

This week on the RASFF database (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) we have one recall from consumers in EU in the alert notification:

Industrial contaminants: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons  in olive pomace oil, following an official control on the market. Origin and notification from Greece, distributed also to Germany;

We have also two recalls, following information for follow-up notification:

Composition: unauthorised substance magnesium aspartate in food supplement, following an official control on the market. Origin United States (via Sweden), notification from Finland;

Between the alert notifications, followed by a withdrawal from the market of the product:

– Allergens: undeclared egg in chicken fillets, following company’s own check. Origin and notification from the United Kingdom, distributed also to Ireland;

– Composition: unauthorised colours Sudan 1 and Sudan 4 in red chilli peppers, following an official control on the market. Origin unknown, notification from France;

– Foreign bodies: glass fragments in rice, following a consumer complaint. Origin Netherlands, notification from Germany;

– Heavy metals: mercury in frozen mako shark, following an official control on the market. Origin Spain, notification from Italy;

– Mycotoxins: aflatoxins in dried figs, following an official control on the market. Origin Spain, notification from Germany, distributed also to France;

– Pathogenic micro-organisms: Salmonella Spp. in frozen salted chicken breast fillet, following company’s own check. Origin Thailand, notification from Denmark, distributed also to Sweden;

Regarding border rejections we have, among the others, Salmonella spp. in hulled sesame seed from India, aflatoxins in pistachio from Iran, in pistachio kernels from United States (via Turkey), in raw pistachios from Syria (dispatched from Turkey), in nutmeg from Indonesia (via China), in shelled almonds from the United States and in dried figs from Turkey, high content of aluminium in quick cooking noodles from China, profenofos in fresh centella from Sri Lanka, chlorpyriphos and profenofos in spearmint leaves from Egypt, diazinon in red kidney beans from Ethiopia, fipronil in yardlong beans from Thailand, clofentezine in pepper from Turkey, dimethoate and fipronil in green tea from Hong Kong.

For feed, we have an alert for poisonous dry dog food (suspected to having caused severe diarrhoea with weight loss), following a consumer complaint. Origin Spain, notification from France. Border rejections for Salmonella spp. in dry dog food and pet food from China.

For food contact materials we have an information for attention, followed by a recall from consumers of  plastic plates from China for colour migrationafter a consumer complaint. Notification from Greece, distributed also to Cyprus.

We have also an alert notification, followed by a withdrawal from the market of ceramic plates for migration of aluminiumfollowing an official control on the market. Origin Portugal, notification from France. Border rejections for migration of nickel from steel toaster tongs and from deep fryer from China, chromium in steel knives from Hong Kong.

For food contact material we have only a border rejection for migration of chromium on steel strainers from China.
