Food recalls in EU – Week 22/2015

This week on the EU RASFF (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) we can find the following notifications:

1. Alerts followed by a recall from consumers:

– Allergens: undeclared gluten (30-98 mg/kg – ppm) in gluten-free rice and buckwheat crispbreads from the Czech Republic, following company’s own check. Notified by France, distributed also to Belgium, Guadeloupe, Lebanon, Martinique and Slovenia;

– Pathogenic micro-organisms: Salmonella infantis (presence/25g) in ground turmeric root from unknown origin, following n official control on the market. Notified by Germany, distributed also to Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland, Italy and Portugal.

2. Information for attention/for follow up followed by a recall from consumers:

– Allergens/Additives and flavourings: undeclared sulphite (170; 160 mg/kg – ppm) in pickled lotus rootlet in brine from Thailand, following an official control on the market. Notified by Denmark;

– Non pathogenic micro-organisms: chilled mixed butters from the Netherlands infested with mouldsfollowing . Notified by Denmark.

3. Alerts followed by a withdrawal from the market:

– Allergens: undeclared milk ingredient (135 mg/kg – ppm) in dried egg powder from Bulgaria, via Poland, following an official control on the market. Notified by Slovakia;

– Mycotoxins: aflatoxins (B1 = 13.8; Tot. = 16.3 / B1 = 15.3; Tot. = 16.7 µg/kg – ppb) in groundnut kernels from India, following an official control on the market. Notified by Greece, distributed also to Bulgaria;

– Pathogenic micro-organisms: Listeria monocytogenes (present/25g) in raw milk cheese from France, following company’s own check. Notified by France, distributed also to Belgium, Spain, Germany and United Kingdom;

– Pathogenic micro-organisms: Salmonella typhimurium (present/25g) in chicken meat from Belgium, from chickens reared France, following company’s own check. Notified from Belgium, distributed also to Gabon and Netherlands;

Pathogenic micro-organisms: Salmonella typhimurium (presence/25g) in chicken meat preparations from Belgium, following an official control on the market. Notified by Belgium, distributed also to France, Netherlands and United Kingdom.

  • aflatoxins (B1 = 2.3; Tot. = 7.1 µg/kg – ppb) in peanuts in shell from China
  • aflatoxins (B1 = 43.36; Tot. = 47.24 µg/kg – ppb) in pistachios in shell from Iran
  • chlorpyrifos (0.6 mg/kg – ppm) and fenitrothion (0.05 mg/kg – ppm) in olives in brine from Egypt
  • coriander seeds from Israel unfit for human consumption (intended for sowing)

Food recalls in EU – Week 5 – 2014

This week on the RASFF database (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) we have three recalls from consumers in EU, following an alert notification:

– Pathogenic micro-organisms: Listeria Monocytogenes in smoked trout fillets, following company’s own check. Origin Belgium (via Denmark), notification from France, distributed also to Luxembourg;

– Pathogenic micro-organisms: Listeria Monocytogenes in gorgonzola cheese, following company’s own check. Origin Italy, notification from Switzerland;

– Mycotoxins: aflatoxins in blanched almonds, following an official control on the market. Origin Australia (via Netherlands), notification from Finland.

Between the alert notifications, followed by a withdrawal from the market of the product:

– Pathogenic micro-organisms: Salmonella enteritidis in chicken, following company’s own check. Origin and notification from Belgium, distributed also to France, Netherlands and United Kingdom;

– Pathogenic micro-organisms: Listeria Monocytogenes in smoked salmon, following company’s own check. Origin and notification from France, distributed also to Austria, Germany and Nigeria;

– Mycotoxins: Ochratoxin A in ground black pepper, following an official control on the market. Origin from Poland/Vietnam, notification from Poland, distributed also to Ireland and United Kingdom;

– Composition: high content of iodine in canned seaweed in spicy marinade, following an official control on the market. Origin Belarus (via Latvia), notification from Germany;

Feed additives: unauthorised substance clopidol in frozen chicken breasts fillets, following an official control on the market. Origin Brazil (via Netherlands), notification from United Kingdom;

Pathogenic micro-organisms: Salmonella Spp. in ground beef meat, following company’s own check. Origin Ireland, notification from Sweden.

Regarding border rejections we have, among the others, Salmonella spp. in frozen salted chickenbreasts from Thailand, Salmonella Heidelberg frozen spiced turkey half breast and in frozen poultry meat from Brazil. Shigatoxin-producing Escherichia coli in frozen bovine meat from Brazil. Aflatoxins in  peanut kernels from China and groundnut runner from Brazil. Norovirus in chilled clams from Tunisia. Poor temperature control of frozen octopus from Peru, frozen hake and frozen crabs from Uruguay. Unauthorised food additive cellulose acetate phtalate in food supplement from Israel, unauthorised novel food ingredient Stevia rebaudiana in food supplements from the United States and unauthorised irradiation of Cassia nomame extract from China. High content of aluminium in vermicilli from China. Spoilage of black pepper from Sri Lanka. Unauthorised use of  colour E 110 – Sunset Yellow FCF in groundnut crackers from China. Absence of health certificate(s) for groundnut chikki from India roasted peanuts without shell and peanut butter from Ghana. Undeclared sulphite in dehydrated carrots from China, via Ukraine, and in dried apricots from Turkey.

For feed, we have the following alert notification and withdrawal from the market of the product:

– Industrial contaminants: dioxins in fish oil, following an official control on the market. Origin Lithuania, notification from Latvia.

For food contact materials we have some withdrawals from the market for too high level of overall migration from lid of jars containing pesto sauce and anchovy fillets from Italy, and for migration of formaldehyde from melamine bowls from Hong Kong.

About border rejections we have migration of formaldehyde from melamine ladles from Taiwan and migration of chromium, nickel and manganese from kitchen and barbecue utensils from China.
